What happened
In brief
The Battle of Badr, fought in Ramadan 2 AH, was the first pitched battle between the Muslims of Madinah and the Quraysh of Makkah, and it was never planned as one. The Prophet ﷺ set out with around 315 lightly equipped men to intercept a rich Quraysh caravan returning from Syria under Abu Sufyan. Abu Sufyan slipped away along the coast and sent to Makkah for help, and the Quraysh raised an army, about a thousand strong at Badr, that marched on even after the caravan was safe. Learning on the road that they now faced an army rather than a caravan, the Muslims consulted and resolved to fight, the Ansar pledging to follow the Prophet ﷺ wherever he led. The two sides met at the wells of Badr on 17 Ramadan. After single combat between three champions from each side, the Muslims attacked in ranks, the Prophet ﷺ pleaded with Allah for the help He had promised, and the Quraysh broke and fled. Around seventy of the Quraysh were killed, among them Abu Jahl, Utbah and Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and about seventy were captured, against fourteen or fifteen Muslim dead. The prisoners were ransomed rather than executed. The victory made the Muslims a power in Arabia, and the shock of it sent Makkah into mourning.
Outcome: Roughly 70 of the Quraysh were killed and about 70 taken prisoner (al-Bukhari) out of an army of about a thousand. Fourteen Muslims were martyred by Ibn Ishaq's list (some count fifteen), under 5% of the Muslim army, and none were taken prisoner.
Significance
Called by Allah Yawm al-Furqan, the Day of Criterion: the day truth and falsehood were separated, Jibril against Iblis, the Prophet ﷺ against Abu Jahl. It made the Muslims a political power the Quraysh could no longer ignore, killed nearly every leader who had persecuted them in Makkah, was the greatest shock the Quraysh suffered in the whole Seerah, and began the hypocrisy of Madinah and the open hostility of its Jewish tribes. Those who fought at Badr are the elite of the Companions, and Surah al-Anfal was revealed about it.

Camp at the wells and the night of rain
Al-Hubab's advice, a shelter for the Prophet ﷺ, and a night the whole army slept through while he prayed.
Ya Rasulullah, this place that you have decided for us to camp: is this something Allah has told you to do, such that we are not allowed to move an inch forward or backward, or is it your own opinion based on the tactics and strategies of war?
In that case, ya Rasulullah, I suggest we don't camp at the corner of the plain; rather, we should proceed until we are beyond the midpoint, so that the wells of Badr are behind us. Then we shall have plenty of water, while they will have to rely on their jugs and canisters.
If you could only have seen us on the night of Badr: every one of us was dead asleep, except for the Prophet ﷺ, who was praying behind a tree and making du'a until the morning.
I know that some of Banu Hashim and others have been forced to come out against their will and have no desire to fight us; so if any of you meet one of Banu Hashim, or Abu al-Bukhturi, or al-Abbas, the uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, do not kill him, for he has been made to come out against his will.

Quote · In Madinah, freeing Abu Azzah al-Jumahi after Badr
You are never allowed to fight against us again. Go back, and never fight against us.
May Allah be merciful to you! Have you lost your senses? Do you think there is only one Paradise? There are many Paradises, and your son is in the highest Paradise of al-Firdaws.
Saying · After the Battle of Badr, on hearing of the Romans' simultaneous victory over the Persians
Why did you say 6? 'Bid'i' can mean up till 9.
News had just arrived that the Romans defeated the Persians on the very day of Badr; Abu Bakr RA had wagered with the late Ubay ibn Khalaf years earlier that this would happen within six years, based on the Qur'an's phrase 'bid'i sinin' (a few years).
Al-Abbas RAWeak chainThis saying was not verified. Ibn Ishaq says the Prophet ﷺ had taken twenty ounces of gold from al-Abbas.
Narration · Later in his life, reflecting on Surah al-Anfal 8:70
Wallahi, I wish the Prophet ﷺ had taken more from me at Badr, because what Allah has given me in return is far more than what He took. I had to give twenty uqiyyahs as ransom, and instead of that twenty, I now have twenty slaves, each a businessman trading on my behalf, and I take the profit of twenty businessmen under me.
A later recollection, not part of the ransom conversation itself: al-Abbas RA said this ayah was revealed concerning him.
dreamer — Named by Ibn Ishaq as Juhaym ibn al-Salt of the Banu al-Muttalib. Saw a dream at Juhfa foretelling the deaths of the Quraysh leaders; Abu Jahl mocked it.
“[Remember, O believers,] when Allah promised [to give] you the upper hand over either target, you wished to capture the unarmed party. But it was Allah's Will to establish the Truth by His Words and uproot the disbelievers.”
This ayah (Q8:7) recalls the same pre-battle moment -- the Muslims hoping for the weaker, unarmed caravan rather than Quraysh's army, when Allah had promised them victory over either.
“If you [pagans of Makkah] sought judgment, now it has come to you. And if you cease, it will be for your own good. But if you persist, We will persist. And your forces —no matter how numerous they might be— will not benefit you whatsoever. For Allah is certainly with the believers.”
Revealed about the Quraysh's du'a at the Ka'bah asking Allah to grant victory to the more honorable of the two armies.
“Even if the two armies had made an appointment [to meet], both would have certainly missed it. Still, it transpired so Allah may establish what He had destined — that those who were to perish and those who were to survive might do so after the Truth had been made clear to both.”
On the two armies missing their intended appointment, yet Allah's decree bringing them together at Badr regardless.
“Don't be like those [pagans] who exited their homes arrogantly, only to show off to the people, and to block others from the Path of Allah. And Allah is Fully Aware of what they do.”
Describes the Quraysh marching out arrogantly to show off and block the Path of Allah.
“And [remember] when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them and said, "No one can defeat you today from amongst the people; and indeed, I am your protector!" But when the two armies faced each other, he turned his back around and said, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I see what you do not see; indeed, I fear Allah. And Allah is severe in punishment."”
On Shaytan appearing to the Quraysh in the form of Suraqa ibn Malik, promising protection, then fleeing at the sight of the angels.
“When sleep overcame you, this was a blessing from Him. And He sent down for you from the skies rain to purify you [with a physical bath], to wipe away the filth of shaytan from you [with a spiritual bath], and to make your footsteps firm”
Describes the rain and the sleep Allah sent the Muslims the night before Badr.
“Allah showed them (the Quraysh) to you as being small in number; if He had shown them to you as big as they were, you would have despaired and differed with each other. But Allah protected you (by not showing the real quantity)”
Describes Allah showing the Prophet ﷺ the Quraysh as fewer in number in a dream before Badr.
“They disputed with you about the truth after it had been made clear, as if they were being driven to death with their eyes wide open.”
This ayah (Q8:6) describes the hesitation some believers felt about engaging the Quraysh's army rather than the merchant caravan at Badr -- the debate this event covers.
“[Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another"”
“[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip."”
Allah instructing the angels to strengthen the believers at Badr.
“You will never find a people who [truly] believe in Allah and the Last Day loyal to those who defy Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their parents, children, siblings, or extended family. For those [believers], Allah has instilled faith in their hearts and strengthened them with a spirit from Him. He will admit them into Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. They are the party of Allah. Indeed, Allah's party is bound to succeed.”
Revealed after Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah killed his own father, Jarrah, in self-defense at Badr.
“They ask you [O Prophet] regarding the spoils of war. Say, "Their distribution is decided by Allah and His Messenger. So be mindful of Allah, settle your affairs, and obey Allah and His Messenger if you are [true] believers."”
Revealed on the battlefield in response to the Sahaba's dispute over how to divide the ghanima collected at Badr.
“O Prophet, say to whoever is in your hands of the captives, "If Allah knows [any] good in your hearts, He will give you [something] better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."”
Al-Abbas said this ayah was revealed concerning him, after questioning why he had to pay ransom despite professing Islam.
“They ask you [O Prophet] regarding the spoils of war. Say, "Their distribution is decided by Allah and His Messenger. So be mindful of Allah, settle your affairs, and obey Allah and His Messenger if you are [true] believers."”
Surah al-Anfal was revealed on the plains of Badr regarding the battle and its aftermath.
“Verily, the believers are those who when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when his ayat is recited, their Iman goes up, and they put their trust in Allah, the ones who pray, and who give their money. These are the true believers. They are the ones who have their ranks with Allah, and forgiveness, and noble provision.”

“O believers! Obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not turn away from him while you hear [his call]. Do not be like those who say, "We hear," but in fact they are not listening. Indeed, the worst of all beings in the Sight of Allah are the [willfully] deaf and dumb, who do not understand. Had Allah known any goodness in them, He would have certainly made them hear. [But] even if He had made them hear, they would have surely turned away heedlessly.”

This [Quran] is nothing but ancient fables!" And [remember] when they prayed, "O Allah! “If only you could see when the angels take the souls of the disbelievers, beating their faces and backs, [saying,] "Taste the torment of burning! This is [the reward] for what your hands have done. And Allah is never unjust to [His] creation." Their fate is that of the people of Pharaoh and those before them — they all disbelieved in Allah's Signs, so Allah seized them for their sins. “Those who believed, Emigrated, and strove with their wealth and lives in the Cause of Allah, as well as those who gave them shelter and help — they are truly guardians of one another. As for those who believed but did not Emigrate, you have no obligations to them until they Emigrate. But if they seek your help [against persecution] in faith, it is your obligation to help them, except against people bound with you in a treaty. Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.”
Surah al-Anfal was revealed on the plains of Badr regarding the battle and its aftermath.
“As for the disbelievers, they are guardians of one another. And unless you [believers] act likewise (i.e., unless you ally with the other believers), there will be great oppression and corruption in the land.”
Surah al-Anfal was revealed on the plains of Badr regarding the battle and its aftermath.
“Those who believed, Migrated, and struggled in the Cause of Allah, and those who gave [them] shelter and help, they are the true believers. They will have forgiveness and an honorable provision. And those who later believed, Migrated, and struggled alongside you, they are also with you. But only blood relatives are now entitled to inherit from one another, as ordained by Allah. Surely, Allah has [full] knowledge of everything.”
Surah al-Anfal was revealed on the plains of Badr regarding the battle and its aftermath.
“And those who believed after [the initial Emigration] and Emigrated and fought with you - they are of you. But those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things.”
Surah al-Anfal was revealed on the plains of Badr regarding the battle and its aftermath.
“If You punish them, they are Your servants, but if You forgive them, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.”
The post directly quotes Isa (AS)'s prayer as preserved in this ayah (Q5:118) -- "If You punish them, they are Your servants, but if You forgive them, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise."
“Make their hearts hard so that they never have Iman until they see the Punishment come down on them.”
The post directly quotes Musa (AS)'s prayer as preserved in this ayah (Q10:88) -- asking Allah to harden the disbelievers' hearts until they see the punishment.
“Allah has decreed, 'I and My messengers will certainly prevail.' Surely, Allah is All-Powerful, Almighty.”
Part of the same closing passage as 58:22 (already linked here), which is explicitly revealed_about Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah killing his father at Badr.
“It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until...”
This is a direct paraphrase/asbab al-nuzul: this ayah was revealed rebuking the decision to ransom the Badr captives rather than execute them, echoed almost word-for-word in the post.
The post recounts a person honoring a prior oath to the Quraysh even at Badr's cost -- the same theme of fulfilling contracts that opens this ayah ("O you who believe, fulfill all contracts").
“[Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another"”
This is the specific asbab al-nuzul: this ayah's promise of angelic reinforcement at Badr is what the post depicts -- the Prophet ﷺ pointing out Jibril leading the angels into the valley.
“And it was not you [O Prophet] who threw [a handful of sand at the disbelievers], but it was Allah who did so”
This is the specific asbab al-nuzul: this ayah ("you did not throw when you threw, but it was Allah who threw") was revealed about this exact moment -- the Prophet ﷺ throwing a handful of pebbles that blinded the Quraysh line.
“The groups shall be defeated and they shall turn their backs and flee”
This ayah (Q54:45) -- a Makkan-era prophecy quoted verbatim in the post -- was famously seen fulfilled at Badr, when the Quraysh were routed exactly as predicted.
“If they follow me, they are of me; and if they disobey me, then O Allah, You are Forgiving and Merciful.”
The post directly quotes Ibrahim (AS)'s prayer as preserved in this ayah (Q14:36) -- "whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me, You are Forgiving and Merciful."
