Whoever ate breakfast in the morning, let him not eat anything for the rest of the day. Today is going to be wajib to fast.
~2 AH (from Muharram through Ramadan) · 2 AH
Within the first two years of the Hijrah, the core rituals of Islamic worship were legislated. On the 10th of Muharram, 2 AH, the Prophet ﷺ made the fast of Ashura wajib (obligatory) as a single day's fast, a stepping stone before the obligation of fasting Ramadan was later revealed that same year's Ramadan (Surah al-Baqarah), after which the 10th of Muharram reverted to sunnah status. In that same Ramadan, Zakat al-Fitr was made wajib, and within months Zakat al-Mal (2.5% of wealth) followed. The rulings of salah were also perfected in this period (Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha lengthened beyond the two-rak'ah Makkan pattern to four, four, three, and four rak'ahs respectively), along with the laws of taharah, wudu, janabah, and ghusl.
Other events recorded in 2 AH. Their order within the year is not established; use the storyline above for the sequence.
