Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl RA was the younger son of Suhayl ibn Amr, the Quraysh's negotiator at al-Hudaybiyyah. After his brother Abdullah defected to the Muslims at Badr, Abu Jandal's Islam became known, and his father kept him in chains and tortured him. In 6 AH he escaped in his chains to the Muslim camp at al-Hudaybiyyah just as the clause returning escapees was agreed, and the Prophet ﷺ sent him back, telling him to be patient, for Allah would make a way out. The Companions remembered it as "the Day of Abu Jandal." He later escaped again to join Abu Basir RA on the coast, where the Muslims who fled Makkah gathered around them.
