About two to three months after Badr, Abu Sufyan (who had vowed not to bathe until he avenged Badr) gathered around 150-200 of the Quraysh and raided one of Madinah's date gardens, killing two Ansaris and burning it down. The Banu Nadir had given his raiding party protection, food, supplies, and water beforehand: a clear violation of the Constitution of Madinah's clauses against aiding the Quraysh against the Muslims. When the Muslims responded, Abu Sufyan's men fled on their camels, cutting loose their bags of sawiq (a dried barley, milk, butter, and honey travel porridge) to lighten their load; the Muslims captured a large quantity of it, though Abu Sufyan himself escaped unharmed.
Outcome: Abu Sufyan returned to Makkah having avenged Badr enough to end his vow, though the Muslims captured much of the abandoned sawiq.
Named for the sawiq the fleeing Quraysh abandoned. The Banu Nadir's hosting of Abu Sufyan's raiding party before the attack on Madinah was blatant treachery against the Constitution of Madinah.
