Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf RA

Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf RA, formerly Abd Amr, was an honest Makkan merchant who accepted Islam through Abu Bakr RA at about thirty and is counted among the ten promised Paradise. He emigrated to Abyssinia, then reached Madinah penniless, where he declined the generous offer of his brother in faith Sa'd ibn al-Rabi' RA, asked only to be shown the market, and rebuilt his wealth. He fought at Badr, where he tried to take his old friend Umayyah ibn Khalaf prisoner, gave his pledge at Hudaybiyyah, and gave generously for Tabuk, where the Prophet ﷺ prayed behind him. In later years he wept over fine food, remembering that the Prophet ﷺ had never eaten his fill of wheat bread.
