These unnamed Companions stayed close around the Prophet ﷺ during the Battle of Badr in 2 AH, guarding him in case the enemy attacked him. When the spoils were gathered after the victory, groups of Companions each put forward a claim. This group said, "We were surrounding the Prophet ﷺ as a precaution that they wouldn't attack. And the only reason we stayed next to him was to protect him. So how could you deprive us? Rather, we deserve it as well." Allah resolved the discussion by revealing that the spoils belonged to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and commanding the believers to fear Allah and set things right between themselves [8:1].
