Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, Abu al-Walid, was an elder of the Banu Abd Shams and one of the leading men of the Quraysh, known for a measure of wisdom and nobility even as he opposed Islam. His brother was Shaybah, his children included al-Walid, the Muslim Companion Abu Hudhayfah RA, and Hind, wife of Abu Sufyan. Before Badr in 2 AH he tried to persuade the Quraysh to turn back and avoid bloodshed, but, taunted as a coward by Abu Jahl, he fought and was killed in the opening single combat. His son Abu Hudhayfah grieved that such a man had died without faith.
