Converted in Makkah in 6 AH, shortly after being captured a second time in the Sariyya of Zayd ibn Harithah to al-Is and released on the condition he send Zaynab to Madinah; he first repaid his Makkan investors in full, then publicly professed the shahada before the Quraysh so no one could say he converted for money.
Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi' RA was a nobleman of the Banu Abd Shams, a trusted Makkan merchant, and the husband of Zaynab RA, the Prophet ﷺ's eldest daughter; his mother Halah was Khadijah RA's sister. When Zaynab accepted Islam he did not, yet he refused the Quraysh's demand to divorce her. Captured at Badr, he was freed when the Prophet ﷺ recognized Khadijah's necklace in Zaynab's ransom, on condition that he send her to Madinah, a promise he kept. Captured again with a caravan in 6 AH, he was protected by Zaynab and had his goods returned, then repaid every investor in Makkah before declaring his Islam before the Quraysh. The Prophet ﷺ praised him as one who spoke the truth and kept his promise, and restored Zaynab to him.
