Seven days after the Battle of Badr, the Banu Salim and Ghatafan detached a raiding party of about 200 men to attack Madinah, seeking revenge for their trade being cut off as an indirect result of Badr. When the Prophet ﷺ heard of it, he launched an offensive; the pagans fled despite outnumbering the Muslims, abandoning their tents, belongings, and animals, so much so that every Muslim who took part is said to have received two camels. As was his practice after a battle, the Prophet ﷺ camped there for three days afterward. An Abyssinian slave named Yasar, the first captured, later converted to Islam and remained a servant of the Prophet ﷺ after being freed.
Outcome: The Muslims returned to Madinah with a large surplus of captured animals and no casualties.
The Prophet ﷺ explained the pagans' flight by saying (in Sahih al-Bukhari): "I have been helped by Allah that my enemies are terrified of me even if I am at a month's journey away."
