Abu Lahab, Abd al-Uzza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, was an uncle of the Prophet ﷺ and one of the fiercest enemies of Islam in Makkah. When the Prophet ﷺ first called the Quraysh publicly from Mount Safa, Abu Lahab cursed him, and Allah revealed Surah al-Masad, cursing him and his wife; he is the only enemy of that time named in the Qur'an. He broke his sons' engagements to Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum, followed the Prophet ﷺ among the pilgrims calling him a madman, and alone of Banu Hashim abandoned the clan during the boycott. On Abu Talib's death he became chief of Banu Hashim and briefly protected the Prophet ﷺ before withdrawing that protection, which led to the journey to Ta'if. He stayed home from Badr and died of a disease soon after the news of the defeat reached Makkah.
