Scholars dispute exactly when Abu Sufyan ibn Harb accepted Islam in his heart, but his public declaration of the shahada came only here, at Marr al-Zahran, reluctantly and at al-Abbas's urging, the night before the Conquest of Makkah.
Abu Sufyan Sakhr ibn Harb RA was chief of Banu Umayyah and, after Badr, the leading man of the Quraysh. For some two decades he was one of the chief opponents of Islam, commanding the Quraysh at Uhud and the confederates at Khandaq, though he is remembered as a noble enemy who avoided vulgar abuse. His wife was Hind bint Utbah, and his children included Muawiyah RA and Umm Habibah RA, a wife of the Prophet ﷺ. He accepted Islam on the eve of the Conquest of Makkah in 8 AH, when the Prophet ﷺ granted safety to all who entered his house, and after Hunayn he was given a large share of the spoils and sent to destroy the idol al-Lat.
