Custody Dispute over Umara bint Hamzah

As the Muslims left Makkah after Umrah al-Qada, Umara, the young daughter of Hamzah ibn Abdul Muttalib RA, ran after them calling out to the Prophet ﷺ not to leave her in Makkah. Ali ibn Abi Talib RA, Zayd ibn Harithah RA, and Ja'far ibn Abi Talib RA each claimed the right to take care of her; Ali and Ja'far as her first cousins, and Zayd as the sworn brother of her father Hamzah RA through the Prophet ﷺ's pact of brotherhood. The Prophet ﷺ praised each of the three men in turn, then ruled that Ja'far should take her, because his wife Asma bint Umays RA was Umara's khala (maternal aunt), and "the khala is like the mother."
