Umrah al-Qada

The Prophet ﷺ left Madinah in Dhu al-Qa'dah 7 AH with around 2,000 Muslims to make up the Umrah they had been prevented from performing the year before at Hudaybiyyah. They brought their weapons, but left them outside the Haram under a rotating guard of 200 men so the rest could perform tawaf, honoring the Hudaybiyyah agreement to enter with only sheathed swords. A Quraysh delegation led by Mikraz ibn Hafs questioned the weapons; the Prophet ﷺ affirmed he would only enter as agreed. The Quraysh of Makkah split into three groups during the visit (some stayed in their houses, some gathered in Dar al-Nadwa, and some camped outside the city) avoiding contact with the Muslims. When a rumor spread that the Muslims had returned from Madinah as weaklings worn down by disease, the Prophet ﷺ commanded the Muslims to raise their voices in talbiyah, expose their right shoulders, and perform raml (a brisk, almost-running walk) for the first three rounds of tawaf: the origin of this Sunnah. The Quraysh were struck by their energy and this display, along with the visible size and unity of 2,000 Muslims around the Ka'bah, left a deep psychological impact. The Prophet ﷺ stayed three days, and the Quraysh honored the treaty without incident.
