New Fiqh Rulings Legislated Around the Time of Khaybar

A number of legal rulings are dated to the time of Khaybar: the prohibition of eating donkey meat (narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari); the prohibition against approaching a concubine before she completes her cycle (iddah); the prohibition of zawaj al-mut'ah, marriage with a fixed time clause, agreed upon as impermissible by all four Sunni madhahib; the prohibition of riba al-fadl (bartering specific commodities like dates in unequal amounts), occasioned by a man bringing the Prophet ﷺ a bag of especially fine Khaybar dates; and the legislation of al-muzara'ah (sharecropping), the arrangement the Prophet ﷺ himself made with the people of Khaybar allowing them to work the land in exchange for a share of its produce.
