Abu Dharr al-Ghifari RA narrated that he was in a gathering with the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali, when the Prophet ﷺ took a group of pebbles in his hand and all present heard them praising Allah. He then passed the pebbles to Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthman, and in each of their hands the pebbles continued praising Allah and all present could hear it. When the Prophet ﷺ left and the pebbles were later picked up again, nothing could be heard from them.
As with the stone that greeted the Prophet ﷺ with salam, the sahaba understood this as Allah lifting, for a moment, the ordinary barrier between human hearing and the constant glorification every created thing offers Him [Quran 17:44].
