Unable to counter the Qur'an itself, the Quraysh resorted to slander, accusing the Prophet ﷺ variously of being mad [Quran, 68:51], a soothsayer [Quran, 69:42], a magician or one bewitched [Quran, 15:15; 51:52; 17:47], and a poet [Quran, 36:69]. The Qur'an responded to each: to the charge of madness, that he had lived a whole lifetime among them and they knew him well [Quran, 10:16]; and to the charge of poetry, that he had not been taught poetry nor was it fitting for him, attested by how rarely, if ever, he ﷺ recited so much as a full couplet of verse in his life.
