While the Prophet ﷺ was praying by the Ka'bah, Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt came from behind, removed his own garment, threw it around the Prophet ﷺ's neck, and began to choke him. The onlookers did not intervene until Abu Bakr was told his companion was being tortured; he rushed over and pulled Uqba away.
Abu Bakr rebuked the crowd, saying, "Are you going to kill a person just because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'?!" Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, who was asked by Urwah ibn al-Zubayr about the worst persecution he had witnessed against the Prophet ﷺ.
