Details differ across the sources
The core Bukhari report (via Ibn Abbas RA) that the Quraysh prostrated with the Muslims at the end of Surah al-Najm is authentic and undisputed. The further elaboration that shaytan inserted "satanic verses" praising the idols (found only in weak, discontinued chains in tertiary sources) is heavily disputed; the majority of scholars, including Sh. Yasir Qadhi, reject it, while a minority (Ibn Hajar for a limited version, Ibn Taymiyyah for the fuller version) accept parts of it.
In Ramadan of the 5th year of the dawah, the Prophet ﷺ recited Surah al-Najm in full before a mixed gathering of Muslims and the Quraysh in Makkah. Surah al-Najm builds toward a powerful conclusion, and its momentum affected the entire congregation; when the Prophet ﷺ reached the final verse, "So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him]" [53:62], the Muslims fell into sajdah, and the Quraysh were so moved that they fell into sajdah with them; Muslim and non-Muslim united behind the Prophet ﷺ for the first time. The only one who did not join was al-Walid ibn al-Mughira (in another narration, Umayyah ibn Khalaf), who instead took a handful of sand, put it to his head, and said it was sufficient for him. This account is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari from Ibn Abbas RA and is the version scholars broadly accept as authentic.
Later, weaker reports (found only in tertiary works such as al-Tabari's Tafsir and al-Wahidi's Asbab al-Nuzul, never in the six books of hadith or in the biographies of Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Hisham) add that shaytan interjected two verses praising the idols al-Lat, al-Uzza, and Manat ("these are the exalted cranes, whose intercession is to be hoped for") between verses 20 and 21 of the surah. In one such report, the interjection was heard only by the Quraysh, not the Muslims; in a further, more extreme report, the Prophet ﷺ himself is said to have mistaken shaytan's recitation for that of Jibril AS and recited the words himself, before Jibril AS returned and told him the words were not his. Western orientalists (e.g. Sir William Muir) later coined the term "satanic verses" for this story; Islamic sources call it Qissat al-Gharaniq (the Story of the Cranes/Gharaniq).
This event explains why the roughly fifteen Muslims who had emigrated to Abyssinia in Rajab of the same year returned to Makkah just three months later, in Shawwal: news of the mass prostration reached them in Abyssinia in an exaggerated form, as a rumor that the Quraysh had accepted Islam, prompting their premature return (see the linked return event). The majority of scholars (including Ibn Kathir, al-Qadi Ayyad, Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, al-Albani, and Ibn Khuzaymah) reject the "satanic verses" elaboration entirely as fabricated and hold that the authentic Bukhari account (the power of the Qur'an alone moving the Quraysh to prostrate) fully explains what happened. A minority of scholars accepted parts of the weaker reports: Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani accepted a limited form in which shaytan's interjection was heard only by the pagans with no interference in the Prophet ﷺ's own recitation, while Ibn Taymiyyah defended the fuller version, reading Surah al-Hajj [22:52-53] as describing it directly and arguing it shows the wahy was protected, not corrupted, and that the Prophet ﷺ's later disclosure of the story is evidence of his truthfulness. A 1966 Cairo conference of scholars concluded that the two later versions are fabrications.

“Whenever We sent a messenger or a prophet before you [O Prophet] and he recited [Our revelations], satan would influence [people's understanding of] his recitation. But [eventually] Allah would eliminate satan's influence. Then Allah would [firmly] establish His revelations. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. All that so He may make satan's influence a trial for those whose hearts are sick and those [disbelievers] whose hearts are hardened. Surely the wrongdoers are totally engrossed in opposition.”
