Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah was the chieftain of Banu Makhzum and one of the most powerful men of Makkah, famed as its greatest poet and the father of Khalid ibn al-Walid RA and uncle of Abu Jahl. The Qur'an alludes to him as one of "the two great men of the two cities" [43:31]. He led the Quraysh in agreeing to brand the Prophet ﷺ a sorcerer even after admitting the Qur'an's power, and verses of Surah al-Muddaththir condemn him.

وَقَالُوا لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلٍ مِّنَ الْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظِيمٍ
“And they said, "Why was this Quran not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two major cities (Makkah or Ta'if)?"”
