The Quraysh once begged the Prophet ﷺ to turn the Mountain of Safa into gold. Believing their request sincere, he made du'a to Allah for it. Jibril came to him and said that Safa could be turned to gold, but that if the Quraysh still refused to believe afterward, they would face instant punishment with no second chance. Understanding the implication, the Prophet ﷺ chose not to pursue it.
Illustrates why Allah does not meet every demanded miracle with a counter-miracle: a rejected sign of that magnitude carries certain, immediate punishment [see Quran, 44:38].
