What happened

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him when the Day of Judgment would be. The Prophet ﷺ asked him in turn what he had prepared for it. The man admitted he had little to show in prayer, fasting, or charity, but said he had genuine love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ told him that a person will be with whoever he loves. Anas ibn Malik RA, narrating the hadith, recalled that the Sahaba were never as joyful as they were on hearing this, since they loved the Prophet ﷺ and had feared their own standing would be too far beneath his for them to be with him in Jannah.

Wallahi, we were never as happy and overjoyed as we were on that day when we heard that a man shall be with he whom he loves. Because we loved the Prophet ﷺ and we wanted to be with him, but we thought our levels would be so different that we would never get to see him.
