Abu Dharr al-Ghifari RA once asked the Prophet ﷺ, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, will you not appoint me to a public office?" The Prophet ﷺ stroked his shoulder and told him he was too weak for it, warning that authority is a trust which becomes a source of humiliation and remorse on the Day of Judgment for all but those who fulfill its obligations properly, narrated in Sahih Muslim.
