Abd al-Muttalib, born Shaybat al-Hamd, was the grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ and the chieftain of Makkah, remembered as the most prestigious Arab of the Jahiliyyah. The son of Hashim and Salma bint Amr of Madinah, he was raised in Madinah until his uncle al-Muttalib brought him to Makkah, where the Quraysh mistook him for al-Muttalib's slave and the name stuck.
He rediscovered the well of Zamzam, whose care stayed with his descendants, and he led Makkah in the Year of the Elephant, when Abraha marched on the Ka'bah. He took the orphaned Prophet ﷺ into his care and loved him above his other grandchildren, and on his deathbed entrusted him to Abu Talib. At Hunayn the Prophet ﷺ declared, "I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib!"
