Hashim, whose real name was Amr, was the great-grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ and the ancestor of the Banu Hashim, son of Abd Manaf and brother of al-Muttalib. His title came from crushing barley to feed the pilgrims, and he was famous for his generosity. In a year of drought he began the Quraysh's winter caravan to Yemen and summer caravan to Syria, mentioned in Surah Quraysh, which made Makkah rich. He married Salma bint Amr of the Banu al-Najjar of Yathrib, who bore his son Shaybah, later known as Abd al-Muttalib, which gave the Prophet ﷺ kin among the Ansar. He died on a trading journey and was buried in Gaza.
