A Group of Jews Mock the Muslim Greeting

A group of Jews came to the Prophet ﷺ and sought an audience, which he granted. Once inside, they greeted him with a play on words, "as-sam-u-alaykum" ("death be upon you"), in mockery of the Muslim greeting "as-salamu alaykum" ("peace be upon you"). Aisha RA, overhearing this, responded sharply on the Prophet ﷺ's behalf. After they left, the Prophet ﷺ explained that his own reply had simply been "wa alaykum" ("and upon you"): he had not adopted their word "sam" at all.
