Wounded in the neck at Uhud by a spear thrust from the Prophet ﷺ himself, Ubay ibn Khalaf was carried off by his companions who tried to reassure him the wound would heal. He insisted it was fatal, and died before reaching Makkah, in the valley of Sarif.
Ubay ibn Khalaf became the only pagan ever killed directly by the hand of the Prophet ﷺ, fulfilling a promise the Prophet ﷺ had made him years earlier in Makkah after Ubay vowed to kill him.

Allah's anger becomes more severe on anyone whom the prophets kill.
I passed by the valley of Sarif at night and saw a fire that frightened me. Going to see what it was, I found the image of Ubay ibn Khalaf coming out of it, crying, 'Thirst! Thirst!' Then an angel behind him said, 'Do not give him anything: this is the one whom the Prophet ﷺ has killed.'
