What happened

In his youth, al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba was a highway bandit of Thaqif who, with a band of comrades, robbed and killed a group of travelers. The victims' tribe declared war on Thaqif, who had to pay heavy blood money to end the conflict; Mughira and his comrades broke up and fled, unable to return to Thaqif. Mughira eventually heard of Islam, embraced it, and made his way to Madinah.

Significance

When Mughira offered his stolen wealth, the Prophet ﷺ told him, "As for your Islam, we will accept it; but as for your money and booty that you stole, we cannot accept any of it", refusing property taken even from non-Muslims by highway robbery. This is cited as a refutation of the accusation that the Prophet ﷺ and the sahaba were highway robbers: as noted in episode 36, they never raided any tribe but the Quraysh, whose caravans they targeted because the Quraysh had confiscated the Muslims' own property at the Hijrah.
