These unnamed Jews of Madinah once asked for an audience with the Prophet ﷺ, and when it was granted, they greeted him, "As-sam-u-alaykum," "death be upon you," in mockery of the Muslim greeting of peace. Aisha RA, who narrated the story in Sahih Muslim, heard them and retorted that death and curses should be upon them. The Prophet ﷺ told her, "O Aisha, verily Allah loves kindness in every matter." After they left, she asked whether he had not heard what they said. He replied that he had answered them, "Wa alaykum," "and upon you," keeping his dignity without cursing them in return.
