During the twenty days the army camped at Tabuk, the companion Abdullah Dhu al-Bijadayn RA died. Ibn Mas'ud RA reports that he woke one night to see a fire in the distance with the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr RA, and Umar RA around it, and found that Abdullah Dhu al-Bijadayn RA had died and the three of them were preparing to bury him. The Prophet ﷺ himself descended into the grave and had the body handed to him, then filled the grave while saying, O Allah, I am pleased with this servant of Yours, so You as well be pleased with him. Ibn Mas'ud RA remarked afterward how much he wished he had been the one in that grave.
Abdullah Dhu al-Bijadayn RA was not a prominent companion: the sources tell us little else about him beyond the story of his conversion and poverty. That the leader of a 20,000-strong army personally woke at night to bury him with his own hands shows the depth of the Prophet ﷺ's care for even his most humble followers, and it is related as a source of great morale for the sahaba who witnessed it.
