What happened

In brief

The Prophet ﷺ renamed Yathrib al-Madinah, Tabah and Taybah, and when the Muhajirun sickened with homesickness and fever he prayed that Allah make it as beloved to them as Makkah. Over the years he taught its blessings: Uhud a mountain that loves them, the Dajjal barred from it, no plague ever within it, faith returning to it as a snake to its hole, whoever plots against it dissolved like salt, whoever wrongs it cursed, and his intercession for whoever bears its hardships or dies there. By his prayer, as Ibrahim had done for Makkah, he declared it a Haram, the second in the world, where no weapon is carried, no game hunted and no green thing cut.

Significance

Scholars differ on whether Madinah is more blessed than Makkah overall, since one hadith records the Prophet ﷺ asking Allah to give Madinah double the blessing of Makkah; Imam Malik held Madinah to be the holiest land, while others held that each city has its own distinct virtue and the two should not be directly compared.
