Soon after arriving in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ visited the souqs (marketplaces) of the city, which were controlled by the Jewish tribes outside the center of Madinah, since the Ansar were mostly cultivators rather than traders. He disapproved of the deceptive practices he found there and said to the Muslims, "This is not a souq for you." He then returned to his masjid and, with his own feet, marked out lines in the sand for a new souq to the west of the masjid, saying, "This shall be your souq. So let it not be diminished, and let no one tax the people in it." Two rules governed it: all business had to stay within the demarcated lines, and no taxes or fees were charged. He also banned interest, praised honesty in trade, forbade cheating, lying, false oaths, and hiding defects, and forbade anyone in Madinah from acting as a paid agent for a Bedouin trader coming to sell his goods, since a local agent could exploit the outsider's unfamiliarity with prices.
Because the Muslim souq was wholly independent of the Jewish-run markets, when the Jewish tribes were later expelled from Madinah one by one and their souqs collapsed, it left no effect on the Muslim economy.
