The 5 daily salahs were given during al-Isra wal-Mi'raj as two rak'ahs each. At some point in the early Madani period, the Prophet ﷺ and the sahaba began praying the familiar pattern of 2-4-4-3-4, with the two-rak'ah form kept for the traveler; the sunan and nawafil were added afterward.
Reported by Aisha RA in Sahih Bukhari: "When we came to Madinah, the salahs were placed as you know them; and the two rak'at were kept for the traveler."
