In the aftermath of the conquest of Khaybar, the nearby Jewish community of Fadak, hearing of the Muslims' victory, sent a letter to the Prophet ﷺ agreeing on their own initiative to the same terms imposed on Khaybar (half their produce going to the Muslims), without any army marching against them or any threat being made.
Because no fighting or siege took place at Fadak, its proceeds were not distributed as ordinary war booty among the army; instead, they became a personal endowment (fay') that the Prophet ﷺ used to support his family and the needy. Fadak later became the subject of a well-known dispute after the Prophet ﷺ's death between Abu Bakr RA and Fatimah bint Muhammad ﷺ RA over its inheritance.
