O people of Makkah! Do not be the last group to convert and the first group to renegade and apostatize.
~Shortly after the death of the Prophet ﷺ (11 AH) · 11 AH
When news of the Prophet ﷺ's death reached Makkah, many of the recent converts there (almost all of whom had accepted Islam only after the Conquest of Makkah) flirted with leaving the religion, and mobs gathered so that the governor of Makkah feared for his life and went into hiding. Suhayl ibn Amr, by then among the most devoted worshippers of the Conquest-era converts, stood at the Ka'bah and delivered a fiery admonition that calmed the mobs and brought the governor out of hiding.
