After the Prophet ﷺ announced that the army would march on Makkah, Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah RA, whose family had remained behind in Makkah protected by no tribe, paid a mawla-lady of Banu Hashim to smuggle a warning letter to the Quraysh, hidden in the braids of her hair. Jibril AS told the Prophet ﷺ exactly where to find her; he sent Ali ibn Abi Talib RA and Zubayr ibn al-Awwam RA to Rawdatu Khakh outside Madinah, where they overtook her caravan. She denied carrying anything until Ali RA swore that neither the Prophet ﷺ nor Jibril AS could have been mistaken and threatened to search her by force: at which point, asking them first to turn around out of modesty, she untied her hair and handed over the letter.
This is the incident behind Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah RA being questioned before the Prophet ﷺ over his apparent breach of loyalty to the Muslims just before the Conquest of Makkah.
