The Prophet ﷺ sent Ali ibn Abi Talib RA to the tribe of Tayy (in the area of present-day Ha'il, Saudi Arabia), the tribe of the legendary pre-Islamic figure of generosity, Hatim al-Ta'i. Hatim's son Adi ibn Hatim, chieftain of Tayy after him, had already converted to Christianity and fled north toward Roman territory with his family and wealth rather than face the advancing Muslims. Ali ibn Abi Talib RA conquered the tribe, destroyed its great idol, and brought back prisoners of war, among them one of Hatim al-Ta'i's daughters. She requested an audience with the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah and asked to be freed, appealing to her father's famed generosity.
The Prophet ﷺ freed her, gave her a camel and provisions, and let her go where she wished. She went north to her brother Adi, rebuked him for fleeing, and urged him to go meet the Prophet ﷺ himself, reasoning that he was either a true prophet worth following or a king worth winning favor from. This set in motion Adi ibn Hatim RA's own journey to Islam.
