Hatim al-Ta'i was the chief of the tribe of Tayy before Islam, a legend among all Arabs as the pinnacle of generosity, who fed every guest and treated strangers like kings. He died before Islam, and his son Adi ibn Hatim RA and a daughter came to the Prophet ﷺ. When Adi asked whether his father's generosity would be rewarded, the Prophet ﷺ answered, "Your father desired something and he got what he desired," meaning the fame he sought.
