A Quraysh Meeting at Abu Talib's House Offers "One Word"

The Quraysh called a meeting with the Prophet ﷺ at Abu Talib's house and asked directly what they could do so that he would abandon his message. The Prophet ﷺ told them he wanted only one word from them. Thinking he meant a single condition, they eagerly offered to give him ten instead of one, until he told them the word he wanted was the kalimah, 'la ilaha illallah.' Taken aback, they said to one another that he had made their many objects of worship into one, calling it something unheard of [Quran, 38:5].
