After the Conquest of Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ sent expeditions to destroy the smaller idols still worshipped by tribes across Arabia (the larger idols having already been destroyed). He sent Tufayl ibn Amr RA with 400 men to a tribe in Yemen belonging to Daws (the tribe of Abu Hurairah RA) who worshipped a massive idol called Dhi al-Kaffayn and had even built their own structure in imitation of the Ka'bah to rival it in Makkah. Before setting out, Tufayl told the Prophet ﷺ that he had trouble staying mounted on a horse; the Prophet ﷺ made du'a, "Ya Allah, make him firm," and Tufayl never fell from a horse again.
Outcome: The temple and idol were destroyed by fire.
Tufayl ibn Amr RA burned down the temple housing Dhi al-Kaffayn, part of the Prophet ﷺ's wider campaign to rid the Arabian Peninsula of idolatry in this period. Later scholars stress this point against modern vigilantes who cite such incidents to justify destroying the sacred sites of other faiths without lawful authority: idols like this were only targeted by the Prophet ﷺ's sahaba after he had established political authority over the land, following the Conquest of Makkah and the Battle of Hunayn.
