In the lead-up to the Conquest of Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ kept the army's true destination secret even from Abu Bakr RA and Aisha RA. To reinforce the deception, he sent a small scouting party of eight men north to Batn Idam, giving the impression that the massive army being mustered would march toward Syria rather than south toward Makkah. Only the night before the army actually departed did the Prophet ﷺ announce that they were marching on Makkah.
A concrete example of the licit military deception (khid'ah) the Prophet ﷺ referred to in his saying "War is deceit," as distinct from treachery (khiyanah), which is never permitted.
