~After Adi ibn Hatim RA's conversion · 8 AH
On one of his later visits to the Prophet ﷺ after his conversion, Adi ibn Hatim RA asked whether his father Hatim al-Ta'i (famed for his generosity and kindness to his relatives and people despite dying outside Islam) would be rewarded for it in the Hereafter.
The Prophet ﷺ's answer became a widely cited principle: a deed done for other than Allah's sake is rewarded by whatever it was done for, not by Allah in the Hereafter. This hadith is related in Ibn Hibban and graded hasan.

Ya Rasulullah, my father used to be good with his relatives, and be generous to his people, and do this and do that. Shall he be rewarded?
His father, Hatim al-Ta'i, was famed across pre-Islamic Arabia as the most generous of the Arabs, though he died before Islam came.
Your father desired something and he got what he desired.
“Whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it accordingly, and is a [true] believer, it is they whose striving will be appreciated.”
Cited to explain why Hatim al-Ta'i's generosity, done without seeking Allah's reward, cannot itself be rewarded in the Hereafter.
