Muhammad ibn Ja'far RA was a son of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib RA and Asma bint Umays RA and the younger brother of Abdullah ibn Ja'far RA. When his father was martyred at Mu'tah in 8 AH, the Prophet ﷺ comforted the orphans, said Muhammad looked like his grandfather Abu Talib, and promised to care for them. He grew up in Ali RA's household with his half-brother Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr.
