Returning home from a journey, the Prophet ﷺ diverted alone into the wilderness with his companions, who followed without asking why. He found a grave and sat down, weeping until his beard was wet, something many of the companions had never seen before. Though none of them asked a question, the whole gathering wept alongside him.
Outcome: He told them: "I had used to forbid you from visiting graves... but I asked Allah permission to visit my mother's grave, and He allowed me. So now I am allowing you." This established the permissibility of visiting graves as a reminder of death, reversing the earlier general prohibition.
