During the early years of peaceful dawah in Makkah, Suwayd ibn al-Samit, a poet of Banu Amr ibn Awf of the Aws, came for hajj and sought out the Prophet ﷺ, having heard of his eloquent speech. Suwayd recited some of his own poetry; the Prophet ﷺ then recited the Qur'an to him. Suwayd was struck by it and said he needed to think it over. He returned to Yathrib and was killed shortly after in the Battle of Bu'ath.
His people later said they were certain he died a Muslim, an early sign that the message of Islam had already reached Yathrib before the Khazraj's formal acceptance of the Prophet ﷺ.
