During the early years of peaceful dawah in Makkah, Suwayd ibn al-Samit, a poet of Banu Amr ibn Awf of the Aws, came for hajj and sought out the Prophet ﷺ, having heard of his eloquent speech. Suwayd recited some of his own poetry; the Prophet ﷺ then recited the Qur'an to him. Suwayd was struck by it and said he needed to think it over. He returned to Yathrib and was killed shortly after in the Battle of Bu'ath.
The culmination of a civil war between the Aws and the Khazraj of Yathrib that had lasted over a decade, fought over land, watering, and grazing rights. The battle killed the bulk of the senior leaders of both tribes, leaving mostly a younger generation weary of a decade of bloodshed. Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul was the one senior leader left standing after the battle.
After arriving at Quba around high noon on a Monday, the Prophet ﷺ stayed at the house of Kulthum ibn al-Hidm RA, an elderly man of Banu Amr ibn Awf; the first sahabi to die in Madinah after the Prophet ﷺ's arrival. It is also said he stayed at the house of Sa'd ibn Khaythama RA, a bachelor; some reports reconcile this by saying he spent the night at Kulthum RA's house (a married man with children) and the day at Sa'd RA's house (a bachelor, so guests could visit without difficulty). Abu Bakr RA stayed at the house of another of the Ansar.
