The Najashi's Political Struggle & the Tawriya

After the Najashi told the Quraysh envoys that Ja'far's words did not exceed what Jesus himself said "by this much of a branch," rumors spread that he had left his people's religion and become a heretic, and discontent grew toward a possible coup. Learning of this, the Najashi wrote a declaration of his true belief ("there is only one God, and Jesus is the prophet, slave, and Word of God") on parchment and concealed it in his robe. He then summoned the instigators and, after establishing his record as a good and just ruler, asked them what their complaint was; when they said he had abandoned Christianity for believing Jesus was not the son of God, he pointed to his chest, where the parchment lay, and answered with a tawriya (a statement with a true hidden and a false apparent meaning) that satisfied them without confirming their creed. Before this confrontation, he had secretly warned the Muslims and prepared an escape ship in case he lost his throne.
