“Al-Najashi”
As'hamah ibn Abjar was the Najashi, the Christian king of Abyssinia, whom the Prophet ﷺ described as a just ruler. He sheltered the Muslim emigrants, refused the Quraysh envoys' demands after hearing Ja'far ibn Abi Talib RA recite Surah Maryam, and survived unrest at his court and a civil war. He acted as guardian at the Prophet ﷺ's marriage to Umm Habibah RA, turned Amr ibn al-As toward Islam, and declared his own Islam in reply to the Prophet ﷺ's letter. When he died in 9 AH, the Prophet ﷺ led the funeral prayer in absentia for him, the only time he ever did so.
