Long after the Battle of Tabuk, when the neo-Kharijites raised fabricated complaints against Uthman ibn Affan RA, Ibn Abbas RA answered them by citing the Prophet ﷺ's own words from the Tabuk fundraising: that whatever Uthman did after his enormous donation to the Jaysh al-Usrah would never harm him.

Whatever your fabricated complaints are, don't you know that your own Rasulullah ﷺ said that whatever Uthman does will not harm him? If he ﷺ said this, then who are you to complain?
