Ten men of the Khazraj and two of the Aws (twelve pilgrims in all, the largest group of converts yet from outside Makkah) met the Prophet ﷺ in the Plains of Aqaba and formally accepted Islam, giving their oath by placing their hands in his. It was later called the Oath of the Women (Bay'at al-Nisa) because, as with women converts, the Prophet ﷺ asked of them only theology and morality: to worship Allah alone, avoid immorality and theft, not kill their children, and obey him ﷺ in good matters, with no political or military conditions. There was no need for secrecy, since it was simply pilgrims conversing with the Prophet ﷺ. It was also the first time the historically hostile Aws and Khazraj came together on common ground.
The first formal, collective conversion of a delegation from Yathrib, and the occasion on which the Prophet ﷺ sent Mus'ab ibn Umayr RA back with them to teach Islam, opening the way to the mass conversions that followed and, in time, the Hijrah.

I was one of those who took the First Covenant of Aqaba, and it was the Oath of the Women. We swore to worship Allah alone, and not to fornicate, steal, or kill our children; we would not live immoral or unrighteous lives; and we would obey the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in all good matters.
Whoever fulfills this oath, his reward will be with Allah. And whoever falls short and repents, Allah will forgive him.
