Years after Shayba's birth, his uncle al-Muttalib (Hashim's brother) came to Madinah and saw the boy in the streets. Recognizing Hashim's features in his face, he asked who his father was; Shayba answered that his father was Hashim. Al-Muttalib then took him back to Makkah. When the Quraysh saw the boy, they assumed he was al-Muttalib's new slave and called him Abdul Muttalib ("Muttalib's Slave"); the name by which he became known, though his true name was Shayba.
